Artificial grass
Artificial lawns installed over a permeable, properly drained base, which is what stops them going flat, smelly or waterlogged.
Artificial grass suits shaded gardens where real turf will not establish, gardens with dogs, and anyone who does not want to mow. It is not maintenance-free, but it is close, and it stays green through an Essex winter.
The base is what determines whether it works. We excavate, lay and compact a permeable sub-base, install a weed membrane, then fit and joint the grass so seams are not visible and edges are secured.
We will be straight with you about where it is not the right answer. Under mature trees, or in a garden you want to plant heavily, real turf is usually the better choice.

Common questions
- Does artificial grass drain properly?
- It does when the base underneath is permeable and correctly built. Laid straight onto clay or an old lawn it will hold water, which is the usual cause of complaints.
- Is it suitable if I have dogs?
- Yes, with the right base and drainage specification. We will specify accordingly if you tell us at the quoting stage.
